As announced today Americans can now go to Syria on a tourist visa, but does this change the situation for American journalists that wish to visit the Syrian Arab Republic? In short no, it does not and various security issues should be kept in mind for those who do wish to visit the country.
What has been the announcement about Americans traveling to Syria?
While never officially banned from visiting Syria the reality for Americans was that though they may apply for a visa, it would not be processed. Despite what many thought this was much less about politics, but much more related to diplomatic relations and the fact that the USA were not letting in Syrian nationals.
This policy has now been changed to such a degree that tourist companies are now welcoming applications from US nationals.
